Black History Month
Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities.
The theme for this year’s Black History Month is “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.”
The origins of Black History Month in Canada may be traced back to the activism of Black community leaders and educators. In 1995, it received official national recognition, which was a significant step in acknowledging Black Canadians' history.
Black History Month provides an opportunity to highlight the achievements, hardships, and experiences of Black Canadians throughout history. It's an appeal to acknowledge the significant contribution that Black people have made to the development of our dynamic and diversified country.
